The site Matadero is located 2km south of Madrid city centre at the end of Rio Park. Previously a slaughterhouse, closed 1990’s due to operational inefficiencies, Matadero is now a multidisciplinary arts centre. However, many buildings on site are still empty and it’s potential is yet to be fully realised.
Thesis explored spatial conditions which provide fertile grounds for social interaction, as well as generation and exchange of ideas. The main thesis themes are derived from the intuitive drawing studies and initial concept model showing the vision of spaces for social occasion, with overarching themes of increment, movement, and threshold which were assumed to be instrumental features in successful social spaces.
Thesis is resolved on two scales - the masterplan and the detailed study. The 6 social spatial typologies within the masterplan were studied in more detail showing qualities of overlap, permeability, threshold, and boundary.
